What is the most effective way to teach? Anyone try the "Your Baby Can Read" series? Mimi has long since learned her letters, but reading...simple words only.

At 4? Still too early. My daughter is a prolific reader and did the normal learn basics in kindergarten / basic reading in first grade and stuff. She did learn letters earlier but learning to actually read takes a lot more time, and maturity I think. It's more than just learning how to sound out words.
I'd focus now on reading to her instead.

I was going to make that suggestion too, actually, but wanted to wait until someone else said it first so I wouldn't come off as sounding like I know everything. Trust me, I don't ...

i won't spend the money on the baby can read stuff. it's a waste in my opinion. i'm not forcing learning on my daughter by any means, but just incorporate letters, numbers, shapes, colors, and many other things in our everyday activities. she recently turned 2. she can identify upper and lower case letters by sight. she is starting to learn letter sounds. she loves books. i read to her on a daily basis and i'm always reading.
some learning toys that leapfrog fridge phonics, simple magnetic letters and numbers, melissa and doug shape clock, books that focus on colors, numbers, and such. my daughter received 7 leapfrog dvd's for christmas and after watching only once, she started to pick up the letter sounds.
leapfrog make amazing learning toys. ther are several resources for print/braille books. you can do simple things such as walking around house or neighborhood and just pointing out new vocabulary words.
i'm tired and my brain isn't working well right now. google pre reading and pre writing activities and that should give you ideas on things you can be doing. I would say at 4, she is doing great, but is pretty early to begin actual reading. we have that are awesome are

My son is 4 and he knows his letters can count to 27 colors and shapes. I just review thoses and he is picking up letter sounds. Don't stress, that is good. Don't push to hard, when I do he shys away from it so I work at his pace.
